Film Director: Ana Laura Vasconcelos
Producer: Governo Regional dos Açores - Direção Regional do Ambiente – Parque Natural de São Miguel
Two islands. Two projects. Two environmental interpretation centres placed in classified landscapes. Commissioned by the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate of Environment and directed by architect Ana Laura Vasconcelos, both projects show that it is possible to transform small interventions into true examples of traditional sustainable architecture. Composition, materiality and lighting are the wanted concepts.
Documentary about two environmental interpretation centres on the islands of Flores and São Jorge in the Azores archipelago, Portugal. The construction of both centres, located in protected landscape areas, is part of an environmental interpretation centre network under the responsibility of the Regional Government of the Azores, which aims to educate the visitors in an informal way, encouraging them to explore, discover and experiment. The visitors are also invited to take part in practical or simulated activities.
Both buildings were (re)constructed – the first one from an old whale factory, a building classified as historical heritage and the second one from a hayloft in Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a protected landscape area. The approach was, therefore, restrictive and specific, respecting local resources and materials. As in all of her works, the composition, materiality and light gaming were privileged.
